Rev. William Morrison House Restoration Update

November, 2011

In July, Bob Pothier, principal of First Period Colonial, installed a waterproof membrane over the first floor framing and subflooring. Previously Bob had finished the framing by installing the joists that were removed when the house was taken down. About thirty percent of the floor framing was replaced with new material due to advanced deterioration from age. When the floorboards and joists were nailed together, they made for a strong platform where people could walk. However, when the separate pieces were reassembled, some of them were not strong enough to be considered usable as a single element.

To protect this work the membrane was installed on top of the rough sub-flooring. The membrane is quite heavy and came in rolls that were glued together at the edges where they overlapped. A small monitor box, with screens was placed over an opening in the membrane for access and ventilation. This is an opening in the floor framing that enclosed the chimneystack that served all five fireplaces in the house.

Since then Bob has been working on the restoration of several beams and posts for the large front room. When the house was taken down the plaster and beam casings were removed to expose darkened, but nicely finished wood surfaces. We are preserving these surfaces, but there is need for some interior reinforcement with new wood and epoxy to strengthen weak or rotted areas. Once this is finished the assembly can resume and we can have framing above the first floor level!
